We went to IRMMW-THz 2022

This year’s IRMMW-THz was held in Delft, Netherlands. Jess gave a keynote talk and Xinyun presented a poster. Surely it was nice to meet all our old and new friends. Hopefully see you all next year!

Jess Won IRMMW-THz Zhenyi Wang Award

“for achievements in THz frequency characterization of advanced functional nanomaterials and their applications in THz devices.” In 2021, at the behest of Professor Shenggang Liu, the IRMMW-THz Society Board is introducing the “Zhenyi Wang award for Excellence in IRMMW-THz” to recognize outstanding female contributors to Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz wave science, technology and applications. The…

Dr Tom Vincent Joins the Team!

Dr Tom Vincent joins the group from University of Surrey, Royal Holloway, University of London, and the National Physical Laboratory, where he completed his PhD in nanoscale light-matter interactions in two-dimensional materials. He has extensive SNOM experience and we welcome him to the group!

Dan wins ‘Best Poster Award’ the SIOE Conference

Dan won the ‘Best Poster Award’ at the 35th Semiconductor and Integrated OptoElectronics (SIOE) Conference in Cardiff, UK, which took place in April 2022. His poster was entitled ‘SNOM Characterisation of Topological Insulator Thin Films’ and the work was a collaboration between our group at Manchester and the University of Leeds.

Our group takes part in New Scientist Live in Manchester!

Yahya, Dan squared, Xinyun and Jessie have all taken part in the New Scientist Live event! We demonstrated a laser maze game to show how spectroscopy works, as well as assisting with an demonstration of ion implantation! Of course, we also had fun on this amazing tractor! The event hosted the general public and also…

Jessie was shortlisted for the Disability Power 100 List 2021

Jessie is now officially on the Disability Power 100 list for 2021. She was selected as the Judge’s Choice for her research into terahertz characterisation of nanomaterials but also her promotion of accessibility in STEM. As a member of the voluntary group, TIGERS-in-STEM, she has published an open access document on barriers facing disabled individuals…

Invited talk at CLEO 2020

Dr Jessica Boland gave her first conference talk by zoom at the CLEO conference. Surprisingly there were no technical hiccups and it seemed to go down well! Her talk was entitled: ‘Terahertz lights up the nanoscale! Revealing the Nanoscale Optoelectronic Properties of Low-Dimensional Materials via THz Spectroscopy and Microscopy’. You can see a snapshot of…

The Cryo-SNOM arrives!

So despite the current complications in the coronavirus situation, the cryo-SNOM (CUSTOM) funded by EPSRC and Henry Royce Institute has arrived! There are a lot more crates then first imagined and a lot of hard work to get it into the institute. Massive thank you to Charles Smith and Dan Tate for helping with delivery….
